why does it state ep90 in steering rack

Post by dalebrignall »

just greased the mog up and changed all the oils diff gearbox and engine.i was wondering whats the reasoning behind ep 90 in the steering rack.i must admit i have put 3 strokes of grease in mind.shorley it must still lubricate the worm gear in the rack will it do any harm.

Originally ep90 was specified but most people put grease in now. The oil tends to fall out of the gaiters too easily ;-)

Besides I only have one decent grease gun, with grease in it.
I tried getting oil into the grease nipple and failed miserably.

You can unscrew the grease nipple and add oil using an oil can, but it can be fiddly removing and refitting the nipple without dropping it

The Mini has exactly the same design of steering rack (just narrower) and has always been specified for grease. My TR7 also has the same design of rack - just wider ! - and again always specified for grease.
Grease it!!

I also tried removing the grease nipple and squirting it in out of an oil can. I just kept getting air lock bubbles. I'll stick to grease.

My gaiters have started to leak from the rack end, I have used nylon tyraps which are not keeping the oil in any more - another reason for using grease!

Given that the lubrication nipple is on the nearside of the rack, would grease be able to travel to the offside to lubricate the inner ball joint
( inside the gaiter ) Think I shall be sticking to EP90.
Quite easy using a sqirty oil can under each gaiter and a new cable tie.

I think EP 90 would do a better lubrication job (mines still the original rack) but 'modern' racks are greased upon assembly and never 'topped up' in their lives!
However, some racks don't last very long!

May as well grease it! Unless you open it up - you won't know.
