I have been trying for the last hour to fit the top pivot part of the quarter lite hinge thingammy bob in situ. when I try to put one of the screws in, the hole and the thread part do not line up. So after much pondering and several cups of rosie lea I had a brainwave. How about if I took the glass out of the quarter lite and from the other side (where the thread is )get a small drill and drill right through the metal frame. Then I could put a peg or something similar through the hole from the inside and prise it so that the other hole and thread line up, once I put a screw in I can pull the peg out put the other screw in and then put the glass back in while the quarter lite is in the door. Has anybody tried this 'cause i'm going to tomorrow unless someone else has a better idea,
wish me luck.

You shouldn't have to be prising anything to get the screws in! The problem is possibly (probably) that the quarter light is not pushed down far enough into the door (the peg at the bottom I'm talking about). It is made worse if you have fitted new seals? Clean the peg and get rid of the crud that builds up on it then give it a smear of grease and push down hard (enough to compress the seal). You should then be able to get the screws in. It may also help to leave the frame part of the hinge slightly loose to allow a little movement on here too and also spin the whole quarter light round to the fully open position. You will see the alignment changes as you turn the quarter light. Hope this makes sense?!?

I vaguely recall running into two different upper hinge hardware for the front quarter light and different spacing of the retaining screws was the problem. Have no idea of the change over point but I would suspect either very early Series III or earlier. Are you working with all the original parts or did you do some gathering?
I had exactly the same problem of holes aligning, I think I must have had a later type quarter light because I could only line up one hole?
I managed to aquire a pair of new quarter lights which didn't have this problem - I imagined I was going to have to drill/tap another hole.
Undo the bottom bearing clamp screws to make life a bit easier for yourself!
I have fitted later quarter lights to my MM without any trouble. I just left everything slack until it was all in place then tightened everything up. I do not recommend putting any form of lubricant in the bottom pivot or there will be insufficient friction to hold the window open at speed. (For those of you that drive at over 30mph!!!)
Don't forget the bottom pivot is adjustable. There is a split brass bushing that is clamped between two metal plates. The two screws through the bottom frame control the clamping pressure, so that it stays where you put it. As you accelerate, you need to tighten the screws. The theory must have been as the bushing wears, the owner could restore the friction. After all these years, there's typically not much left on the original parts.
On mine, the top pivot has 2 mounting screws, I lined it up roughly by hand then poked a screwdriver through one hole and this allows you to line the other hole up, put in the screw but don't do it up tight, remove the screwdriver and insert the other screw, then tighten both.
many thanks for your replies. I will now print them all off put them in my useful folder and then i'll go down to the garage and try all your suggestions.
once again thanks and i'll let you know how I get on.

success, I cleaned up the bottom prong, which was fairly rusty, filed about 1/2 mm off the bottom and it gave me just enough room to get the hinge pivot on. It's not as though i'm going to use the quarter lite, it's in case some t***r tries to steal my car. anyway they are only used for flicking fag ash out of so now hopefully I am secure.
once again thanks for the input.

Well done - I knew what you meant as I had the same problem. Took me a while to figure out the quarter light wasn't sitting down far enough - Simples when you know how

Come the sunny day in the summer (whenever that is) you will come to appreciate the opening quarterlights. They can be adjusted to direct a cool breeze exactly where you need it, even turning them around as far as they will open to direct a blast of air right on to your face. Modern ventilation systems have forgotten something.
