On the way for my MOT, big bang no drive and----------

Of all the times to pop a half shaft!
This is what was left in the diff!
Image
Twisted up a treat as well, it was a sod to get out of the carrier, but luckily I,ve a spare pair I bought on e-bay to put in! I just hope I got them the right way round going off the faint wear ridges on them! at worst its a fifty fifty chance.
And the garage were understanding and have re-booked me in for tommorow so we will see how she goes.
Assuming its an original axle half shaft its had 37 years of stops and starts and a quarter of a million miles so its not done to bad.
Anybody used the 'hardened shafts' that one particular specialist advertises
I'll see you on the otherside'!

Good luck for the MOT.
At least you got to check the back brakes!

As you say its done 37 years and 250,000 miles so why spend out all that money on a toughened one?
Standard shafts seem to be coping with my 1275.

How much of a bang did it make I only ask because the last one I had go some years ago only gave out a loud click.
Cheers

Dont forget mines a van, no carpets rear seat etc, and any noise echoes around the box, it was a big enough bang to make me jump! and then realise my speedo was still doing 25 MPH even though I was slowing, strange how quickly the brain can run through the possible causes and work out what had happened in this case I'd sussed it before the van had coasted to a stop
At least you got to check the back brakes!
I did and according to a mechanic who gave them the once over I've put the top shoes on the wrong way round with the 'leading' edge trailing now I didnt think that mattered on a single cylinder setup but looking in the manual it does appear to show the shoes placed as he suggested with the longer visible piece of steel on the leading side, but they work and I was hoping to get to Manchester for the meeting if all falls into place

STOP PRESS SHE PASSED well with two minor warnings non critical corrosion (no suprises there) and one steering rack getting a bit notchy, plus as a bonus while he was teaching the apprentice about tracking they ran mine over the test and found out mines got a half inch toe in!!! looks like its wheels off spanners out for next weekend.
I'll see you on the otherside'!
