As if a 948cc minor would ever struggle up a 1:4 hill like that, perhaps he was in 3rd gear.

I didnt check the length beforehand but was expecting it to be longer that half an hour, it all seemed a bit rushed really.

Apparently Richard Wilson has only driven automatics since passing his test so had to take a 'crash' course in driving manual cars before filming started. Probably explains the crunching gears.

Did they throw in a spare gearbox as part of the deal?
He took too long getting out of Scarborough (no offence to anyone living there), would have prefered more on the open road.

Great program - the Traveller performed well! Hopefully the hill start incident was 'staged' to make the story a little more interesting. Pity he didn't call in at the NYMR - for some shots with proper Steam trains.

What a great programme, so relaxing and enjoyable. I agree Bmc... perhaps a trip to the preserved railway would have topped it off nicely.

Now you know why I'm always out driving in that area, don't like Scarborough so don't go that far, no need to really as you can see the countryside is wonderful and there are some even better roads & views if you know where to go.
Good program though and enjoyed it, wonder how the Moggy gearbox is ??

Shame they didn't do the railway, it's fantastic

Actually, that Hill in Whitby saw off the old gearbox before the filming- the one Richard was driving was a re-conditioned one, and perfectly healthy. I think he should have double-de-clutched and changed down to first before taking on the hill with four Goths on board! He was revving it a lot in low gears as well, but he said he enjoyed driving the Morris, unlike the Camper in a subsequent episode!

Excellent show! Ive just finished watching it, had set the sky plus. I toured around this area in my traveller after the national rally in Scunthorpe and really enjoyed it, great countryside. When we stayed in Whitby the sea mist didnt lift for 2 full days and our campsite was at the top of that hill that Richard messed up!!

it would have been nice to see him going down the hill at sleights which is just before whitby nice and steep and wyndy,i supose there is only so much you can show in 30 minutes the nymr would have been nice but there is a lot of it on heartbeat.i notice they did they did not show the traveller outside the garage it was in a shocking state when i saw it 2 years ago the recovery lorry and the a40 are rusting away nicley,i would be embarrassed if i had them on display gets off soapbox looking forward to next week.

Well it was about Britains Best Drives and there has been quit a few programmes on railways recently, its unusual to get a programme focusing on classic drives

I thought Richard Wilson's show was a bit short too and I completely agree that too much time was spent in Scarborough. Lovely car but with so much referring to the 50s, I wondered why a 60s Traveller was used?

I have a confession though... I actually preferred the program AFTER... Penny Keith in the De-Dion... I'll get me coat.

Not quite sure of the year of Steves car as it is a re-reg but before his ownership and I think its either a 59 or 60 know doubt he will put my awful memory straight.

Great programme, Richard looked like he was driving the Traveller quite fast on some of the narrow bits!

Car looked excellent.
