Just noticed on ebay, they have "changed there policy on selling knives" Watchdog must still have some clout then!

Firstly, if you had a van (or any other vehicle) with no ID then it's probably been stolen.

Fair enough. I was thinking more along the lines of barn finds and the like.

Secondly, insurance companies write off vehicles for good reason. Its less likely to happen with more valuable classics than with run of the mill cars so a write off classic would need (at the minimum, say) re-shelling. This would not invalidate the ID of the original vehicle (according to the DVLA points system) as long as sufficient donor parts from the original car are re-used.

Ah, so there is a way back for a 'write off' then.

Will having a Q plate prevent the vehicle being registered as 'historic' and thus lose its tax free status?
If so, 50 quid on ebay may still seem an attractive option to many.

Q plates are not age related so as long as proof of manufacture can be obtained and "Historic Status" granted the car will be tax free. A genuine barn find - even without paperwork of chassis plates, may still have identifying marks which can prove provenance and with the help of the club or specialists the ID and sometimes even the original number can be obtained legally from the DVLA. I can see where you are coming from dunketh, but there really is no excuse for ringing a vehicle....

if having a Q plate worries you simply get the vehicle onto a Q then buy a personalised cheep cherished number,

You would still need to have the "Q" status removed by DVLA before you could do this. It's not impossible but it does mean having to prove the date of manufacture and provenance of the vehicle concerned.

I have a vehicle that falls into this catagory - an incomplete barn find that has lost its plates and no paperwork. Process is as follows, obtain the Heritage Certificate, using the chassis number, fill in the V55 for, applying to register a car, send these and photos of the vehicle to the authorised person in the appropriate club (MMOC in our case!), he then approves it (hopefully!) and sends it to the DVLA who issue an age related plate within a week or so...

Got one that falls into this catagory too, and starting to go through the process...Wether or not a vehicle has been 'written off', unless it is a catagory A or B write off (burnt out or really seriously damaged and should be destroyed or fit for spares only respectively), the vehcile still retains its ID. The insurance company will retain the V5 and send it to the DVLA when the claim is paid out. To get the vehicle back on the road, you need to a: MOT it, then B: submit it for a Vehicle Identity Check at a local DVLA centre. You can provide documentary evidence that it is that vehicle, but really they're just checking that you've not stolen one and swapped the ID. How good this check can be with a Minor is debatable, but if you've got photos showing the damage and they can see its been repaired and the same car, I shouldnt envisage any problems. Having passed the VIC, they then send you a V5 and you can them tax it. But you do retian the registration as you have proved that it is and always has been that vehicle...

Incidentally, if you reshell with a secondhand shell, (and tell them) that normally means a Q plate, as there's a large lump of another car involved, if using a new shell then no problems. An odd rule really...

It normally does - a Q plate means a vehicle of unproven age. Ie: if the barn find had no chassis plate and you couldnt prove its age, then you're heading towards Q plate terretory, and paying for the tax disc. Thats when the dodgy V5 on ebay has an appeal, but it dosent make it right. There's a distinctive Minor that keeps appearing on ebay that was first seen with a Q plate, and now has a normal registration. Either the owner has found proof of age somehow, or just swapped chassis plates from a scrapper...

dvla moniter ebay for all v5c's.
you won't find out anything untill you register in your name etc, unless your lucky an get one thats not got a reg shown or escapes the radar!!!
and they also look at web forums!!!!
