have replaced rear side windows on 2 door saloon very loose

Post by ssnjimb »

Hello.

I have just replaced the rear window seals on my 69 2 door.

They are very loose (the glass and rubber move about.

When i removed the old seals there were pieces of what looked like black blue tack to keep things still.

Will silicone sealent do the same job and keep it water tight as that is why i replaced them because they were leaking.

Kind Regards

I posted a similar problem regarding side window rubber. I phoned the supplier (ESM) who told me to use sealant (they do). I purchased the proper stuff (not cheap), but still not really happy with it. They do appear to be leak free now though. It seems that the gap in the rubber is a very slack fit in the glass.
Plus side, they fitted easily as they were so slack.

Mine aren't a wonderful fit ether. the cross section of the seal looked a lot thinner than the original ones I did reused the metal clips which helps. The sealer I used was the proper windscreen stuff that doesn't set

originally there were 2 metal straps on each side windows
one on the bottom and one on the side of the B post

this helped in securing the window and rubber

not easy to put these in, so i left mine out

the gap in the rubber is a very slack fit in the glass
I'll go along with that. The side window seals on a convertible are a bit different in that, to a certain extent, they are a push fit seal as the top rail clamps the whole lot together. Nevertheless mine leak between glass and rubber too.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I didn't take my side windows out (they don't leak) as the gap in the rubber looked wider than the glass was! - I thought leave well alone!
There appears to be some sort of sealant used in the gap (probably 2mm thick) which must have been factory applied.

Hi James check that the sealant is suitable to be used with rubber not all of them are.
Cheers
