London to Brighton Run

Post by rsawatson »

I am a new member of the Club, and with my Minor came a collection of old club magazines and other literature. In the 2007 handbook, it mentions the "25th London to Brighton Run (SHBB)", being on Sunday 1st April that year. I cannot find a corresponding event in the 2009 diary... does this event no longer run itself, and if so does anyone know why?

Thanks - Ryan.

I think that the Brighton Council went way over the top with the dreaded Health & Safety requirements such as wanting qualified operators to man barriers. The costs became prohibitive, and so the 25th was the last run. I'm open to correction on this. Don't worry, there are plenty of other runs to do.

From discussions I had with Giles Vodicka, chairman of the Surrey and Hants Border Branch which organised the London to Brighton Run, the reason the run was terminated was that Brighton City Council insisted that they would supply the marshalls on Madeira Drive, Brighton and charge an extortionate fee for the priviledge, in spite of the fact that branch members had been doing a perfectly satisfactory job for many years, in fact some would say a better job. Unfortunately it would seem that other organisations doing similar events were not so efficient.
This, coupled with the fact that Battersea Park had also racked up their fees in previous years forcing a move for the start of the run to Wandsworth Prison meant that the event would have run at a loss which was not good to the charity which the run supported and could not be sustained by the MMOC which would have been prepared to subsidise a one off loss but not a long term financial drain.
Therefore as further discussions with Brighton council proved fruitless the 25th Anniversary Run ended what had been a popular and successful event. London to Bognor did not seem to have the same appeal.

I'd do Bognor. I used to live in Bognor, and I think most residents would find a Morris quite modern.

Maybe you ought to contact the Surrey and Hants Border branch and suggest it.

I really miss the London to Brighton :(
It was the perfect start of season run and always very well organised.
Madeira Drive was convenient but getting a bit old and clearly more trouble than it was worth.
The park where it used to end was fine and anyone who wanted to see the sea could easily do so if they wanted.
Bognor Regis sounds like a good alternative to me.

What about London to Portsmouth? We could head through Hindhead along the Devils Punchbowl (glorious scenery) through the downs, along the top of portsdown hill (one of the most fantastic scenic points in Hampshire) and down along the seafront ending at the old Royal Marines Artillery Barracks (now the Royal Marines Museum...where I happen to work and live (although slightly apart from eachother), which means I can have a drink! :P) hehe.
