hi team,
i bought some new bush's for my starter motor and they are completely different from the old ones. are there different types of motors fitted or have i got a motor from something else fitted? the starter motor i've got is a lucas and model number on it is Lrs101. any ideas?
mogatron, are we talking "bush's" (bearing type things) or "brushes" (electrical conductors) I'm not been picky but the answers may be different depending on what you are talking about

As far as I am aware all starter motors for Minors / Minis etc with A Series engines are mechanically the same. If you order brushes for a Morris Minor starter you should get the correct part.
There were 2 types of starter motor used. The M35G and M35J. The arrangement of the brushes and the earthing system were different but I think the brushes were the same, so as Mike says and if they look like the above picture, they shouls be correct. The part number you quoted (different to model number) is for a standard (late model) starter motor.

You starter motor is the later J type and has different brushes, the wedge shape ones you have pictured. It's probably had a replacement starter motor as this type wasn't originally fitted. Try ringing around suppliers to get the later type of brushes.
You are very lucky mogatron, not many J types about these days The replacements sold are nearly all G type but you still should be able to get brushes for them.. Try your local motor factors? I've never seen inside one so thanks for the pics

Try cleaning off all that copper dust, it will make the smoke go to all the wrong places.
When the brushes no longer make contact with the armature (or just before) is the time to replace them.
super thanks team. i've just noticed when putting in back on the tron that the main spring at the end has craked. you can see in the photo. is it worth trying to source a new one if its still working?
