Recently bought a minor with the toyota gearbox. Works fine, crunches at times but in neutral, clutch out, it makes a loud whurring noise. Clutch in noise goes away.
Is this a sign of major work required?
If so what action is required?
And who sells the bits?

Unfortunatly the Toyota gearbox is not a very common conversion so if the problem is with the gearbox you are going to have to find somewhere that repairs Toyota boxes and from what I remember it wont be cheap.
I can't actually remember a posting with a problem with this gearbox so fingers crossed.

Definitely check/top up the oil first, then I think I would want eliminate the release bearing as the cause first?
The oil is a 'non-EP' 80 grade - I use a 75w/80 semi-synthetic. The multigrade gives a slightly thinner oil at low temperatures and reduces the tendancy to crunch into 2nd on the first few chnages from cold. Do not use a standard diff EP90 oil, or any 'EP' type oil at all.
Can you define 'clutch in' and 'clutch out' please? Always a bit ambiguous!
Do you mean that when sitting with the engine running, in neutral, clutch engaged (pedal 'up/released'), there is a whirring noise? What happens when you drive along, do you get the same noise? If so, in all or some gears only?
I have the Toyota T50 gearbox, and assuming yours is the same 'box, for spares, all the bearings, except the centre one on the layshaft, are 'standard' and available from any of the bearing suppliers/factors. A complete set is ~£40. The centre one is Toyota only and was about £90; fortunately it doesn't need replacing very often.
The gasket/seal set used to be available from Toyota for ~£10.
I have the bearing numbers and Toyota gasket set part number, together with the relevant pages from the Celica Haynes manual that I could scan and email you. Please let me know if you would like any/all of it?
