hello i see that the protesters at immingham are standing firm over overseas workers taking ther jobs,,when will we see british workers at the gates of the brussel and other veg fields i dont think so,espcialy as the weather is bad at the momment or any other time,,grandad

at least they are standing up for brittish jobs it must be a bit gauling if you are a qulified worker and the job goes to someone else because of an eu directive.

Hmm I wonder when we'll see some English protesters outside parliament protesting all those cabinet jobs that have gone to the Scots :)

well i understand what you say but for what reason did they bring in the outsiders are they cheaper/ faster/ do a better job to bring in outsiders and accomadate them pay fair wages i understand there is one floating hotel and another on the way what cost is all this surley we must be able to compete with our local workforce my local ciy of lincoln were massive on engineeringi think the worlds first tank was built in lincoln as was rustonbucyrus who built the draglines including jordy one of the worlds largest excavators.so why are they not useing british labour force.thank you grandad

when i had no work in england i went to germany to work, the same as overseas workers come here

in the past i have employed overseas workers, they are hard working, do not moan, and very skilled at their job oh and most important they are very proud of what they do

Hello all,

it is a thorny problem as the oil company is entirely within the law and their rights. This is a 'benefit' of being in the EU.
Now the oil company is French, I understand, so may use the same contractor over in France for instance, so some sort of 'preferred' contractor?
However, I wonder, in practice, how many EU countries do follow the law and make contracts open to all, I suspect that there will be a lot of protectionism despite the law. It seems that we bend over to follow these EU directives whereas other members are less likely to.

Alec, I agree. This country is the first to bend over and take it, but double standards exist elsewhere. However with the current shower in power, there is little room for manoevre these days, so folk are resorting to other tactics to engineer a result. Question is - how would the French take it?

when i lived in france, there was no predujices against any eu countries applying and getting jobs there

I have no problem with overseas workers ,working over here, as I have no problem with British workers plying their trade in Europe.
What really annoyed me a while back was the fact that I employed an Australian panel beater for a few weeks, he wanted to live and work in the UK, pay taxes and contribute to this country. Unfortunately he had two criteria working against him, one his place of birth and two his age ie over 21, oh and three he was not a Judge or brain surgeon.
I applied to the Home office to allow him to stay ,however I was told that I had to advertise his position in the UK and if no takers then the whole of the EC, before they would consider an appeal. Needless to say this great bloke,hard worker and member of the Commonwealth had to return to Australia. His only possible way back is to marry an British woman.
