But not essential - you can do a pretty good job if you have a long hill nearby - and a plug spanner! If you do go to a rolling road - chose carefully - many have no idea about setting up SU carbs etc - and will simply run the car on the rollers, maybe tweak the ignition timing slightly - give you a nice print-out, and then empty your wallet!



Agreed you do need a rolling operator who knows what he is doing. Any Mini tuner should know his stuff.
It is possible to tune an engine by reading the plugs but it will be time consuming. Drive the car at full load, read the plugs, tweak, drive again, then part load etc etc
A wide band lamda sensor would speed things up , but the people who know how to do all this will not need telling how important it is to get the correct mixture after doing any mods.
I still maintain that the rolling road is the most effecient way of getting the mixture and timing set up.
