Spray Paint

Does anybody know if it's possible to get hold of Clipper Blue in a spray can for touch-up paint or would I have to get it specially mixed? I've used Smoke Grey from the Classic Colours spray paint range in the past but I don't ever remember seeing Clipper Blue in that range...

You will have to go to a motor factors to get the paint made up, but they can usually put it into a spray can rather than by the litre if you prefer. I've never seen clipper ready mixed. If you post whereabouts in the country you are based someone may be able to recommend a local firm.

Sorry Rob - should have replied earlier - I've replied to your PM too, but thought I'd post it up here in case anybody else found the information useful.

I presume you've tried the main Moggie spares suppliers?

ESM

Charles Ware

Bull Motif

Birmingham Morris Minor Centre

(other spares suppliers are available.....)

I got some Trafalgar Blue for my 4-door in an aerosol from Charles Ware - maybe they do Clipper Blue too?

Failing that, your best bet is to contact these guys:

They are professional paint and body shop suppliers, I've used them before, a few years ago, and they supplied me with both tinned Cellulose and mixed-up rattle cans. Phone them up to check, they may be able to do it from the paint code or they can do it from a paint chip/sample. If they can't, then ask them if they have any bright ideas as to who can do it.

Failing that, you can have a search around Yell.com for paint suppliers.....

If none of the above works, then next step is to go to a supplier that is more distant but that does a good postal service - have a look at this thread on another excellent forum that I use:

You should see some links to other suppliers - a postal service will work fine if they can do it from the paint code.

Personally, I'd get some tinned un-mixed paint as well as a rattle can, as I have found this VERY useful for touching up tiny stone chips etc. with a fine paint brush - the previous owner of my car gave me a big tin of spare paint, and this has proved really useful!

Halfords still make up paint by the can if I remember they are listed under Leyland in their listings, they can also make up tins of touch up paint as well, and while you wait.

Yes, but the problem is that while some of the staff in Halfords are very good, many are complete numpties who don't know how to drive the mixing machine properly, and I've heard a number of stories of paint matches that aren't even close to what was required - it all depends on what sort of person you get serving you in your local branch.

It's a possible option though, of course.

Well, thanks for all the suggestions guys! I know the original code for Clipper Blue is BU14. I just popped into the Halfords round the corner from my office in Chiswick and gave them this code. They checked to see if they had it on their records. They actually had all the codes of the different paints that go together to make Clipper Blue. Unforutately, they didn't have all the paints in stock. Oh well, I'll probably try that body shop specialist in New Malden now that I have all the individual paint codes and hopefully they'll be able to mix it up for me. Cheers!

Hi

I haven't read all this thread but I have just bought some cellulose Clipper Blue for a future project.
But I am not sure if the colour is correct and I don't have a car to compare.

Where are you? It would be really useful to see your car and verify my paint. I have a sample pot (of paint) as well if that would help you out.

ah - I'm Southampton.

I'm not sure if my Clipper blue is correct - it looks quite greeny, grey - I need to check it soon against a known correct colour.

Clipper blue is very similar to Wedgewood blue. Is it that you need to establish if you have this colour (as opposed to another) or you need to find if it is a accurate shade?

Did your loacl Hellfrauds not offer to a) phone round others to see who had the necessary tints or b) tell you when they would have the missing tints back in stock ? But - if ESM have the cans anyway - seems likely to be the least expensive solution!
Answer too for Keithb - just get a can from ESM and compare!

In answer to your question Louise, yes I did check out the link to East Sussex Minors and I bought the touch-up paint there and then! Just hope the match with my car will be OK! So thanks for that link Frank!

The chap at Halfords didn't know when they would be getting the missing tint back in stock and didn't phone any other branches. He just suggested I try bigger branches near where I live like Guildford or New Malden.

And Keith, if you need to see an example of Clipper Blue for your paint, I've posted a picture of my Clipper Blue Convertible at the begining of this thread so you can see exactly what shade it is. Hope this is of help.

I've ordered a can from ESM so I can check it. Is it celly in the can?
