rear wing repairs

Post by paulbarnes »

Looking at a minor to buy, and the body in general looks ok. Only thing that I'm worried about is that one of the rear wings had no beading and had filler in the gap where the beading should be. Oviously the wing will have to come off to repair the bodge.
I'm expecting that the panel behind with the captive nuts will be rotted, explaning the filler.
How difficult is it to repair this section? I'm fairly decent with a welder, having restored quite a few jalopies in my time.

Cheers

if you are a competent welder then it should be ok
but the rot may extend to the outer bit of body as well as the inner flange
look very carefully, you can see this section if you take off the inner card if its a 2 door

Yes as Dennis says and also check in the boot areas for signs of rot or bodgery.

Cheers chaps,

The it looked like it had a bodged repair in the boot to the inner wheel arch. Didn't look to bad though.
The vendor is asking 750 for the car so I'm still trying to decide on weather to go for it. My budget is small so selection is limited!
If any of yo feel like lloking on e-bay it's the '70 1000 in Durham I'm looking at. Any comments welcome

It's bids starting at £750. I wouldn't go much higher.

I asked the guy today if he would take 600. he said that 750 was his bottom limit. I might bid the 750 but no higher.

I haev to say the rest of the car looks ok and solid. It's just that rear wing bodge I'm concerned about.
Thanks for the help so far.

Repair panels are available so worst case you would have to cut out all the rot and weld in the new panels. If the rest of the car is good then go for it but little bits can add up so check carefully....

I suppose with 10 months MOT at least I'll be able to drive it for a while.
I'm going to bid the 750

It's a bit 'multi-coloured' but if it runs (and stops) ok and has that essential 10 month MOT - it could be worth a punt. Depends if you see that roof as an advantage - or not. It may leak !!

I'd also budget for a replacement bonnet as the one on the car looks beyond repair - Good news is that you can get secondhand for about £10....
