No, you're not dreaming, I can remember them too. I think that there was a slot cut in the shelf for the belt to come out (slot lined to protect webbing) and reel mounted on "bulkhead" behind the seat. It looked really neat, but I don't know how you'd get the buckle through the slot; and I can't find the post either, but it was definitely there at one time. Hopefully someone else will be able to find it for you......

One thing I must add is that the position of the holes for the stubs (shown in the centre of the seat floor pan) will depend on the seatbelts you chose because of their length and angle. On some designs you may need to drill the base of the rear bulkhead instead of the floor to allow the stubs to pass cleanly between the seat cusions.
Furthermore, you must satisfy yourself that your car's metalwork is in top order before you entrust it's integrity with such a conversion. I cannot condone this sort of work on aging metalwork or cheap replacement panels. If in doubt seek professional advice.

Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

There's not enough space at the sides of the rear shelf for them to fit flat, it can only be done if you make new brackets to raise the reel to the level of the top of seat.
That's why a lot of minors have the belts starting in the middle and going outwards as the middle of the shelf is wider.
They look nicer anyway when they're hidden
