Interesting article and I dont doubt that there is considerable back pressure caused by the baffles within the silencer. When I last had my engine out it was treated to the double valve spring (Terry) which I obtained from Gosnay Engineering in Romford, as I remember the original single spring was so soft although I remember it was up to spec.
The original setup of locating the manifold on 4 studs was never very good and allowed some degree of 'mismatch' between block and manifold(s)
Tortron - is your straight through coby a stainless unit?

Mike, I take it that from your post of Graham Holts comments that he is not 'on the web'?
If that is the case would it be possible to approach him with regard to some of the content of the comment?
In particular his reference to the Servais or Burgess straight through silencers. I would be very interested to know if the units were absolutely straight through ie with a perforated tube running through the box (end to end) the only silencing coming from absorbant material external to the perforations contained within the silencer outer case.

A quote for you to ponder.
Normal baffle-type silencers hinder the flow of exhaust gases and reduce the efficiency of your engine. Speedwell Exhaust Systems, by incorporating Supertone Silencers with 'straight through' Servais absorption allow these gases to escape freely and enable your engine to develop its full power with maximum fuel economy.
Servais exhausts used to be produced in Cricklewood not far from where I grew up but ceased trading there a long time ago, however they do still exsist but I dont know if they still do car exhaust's
