Happy new year to you all quick question what type of number plate would a 65 two door have origanley? Im thinking it would have been the plastic letters/numbers is this right. What colour and can you still get them
Cheers
IIRC in 65 it would likely have had plastic letters on black ally background. You can still get them - try a bit of google for classic plate suppliers. I don't know when the dealers started using plastic letters on white/yellow plates but from memory that was a couple of years later.
However, the pressed alluminium plates (black with raised ally letters) are a bit more 'fashionable' therefore lots of people supply them and are likely to be cheaper than the plastic letter version (but less original)

If you want the white plastic on black ally background then give MGM Spares a ring. They did mine last year for £26 inc VAT & postage if I remember correctly.
The front number plate on my 1965 car is pressed aluminium, and it looks as if it's original from the fading / general ageing. The rear is likewise pressed alu. but has been repainted by the previous owner.
Hope this helps,
Dom.

Remember that number plates are dealer fit and as such could have been of any type of construction available at the time. I've had early 70's cars with black and silver plates and late 60's cars with white and yellow plates on.... Unless you know the car from new it would be virtually impossible to know what was original. The best you can go for is the correct period style of your choice.....

I also used Framptons and they are excellent to deal with.I personally went with white raised on black as they suit the car but really it's down to personal taste.
If it's a saloon - don't forget to ask for an undersize rear plate (no edging) with radiussed corners. Otherwise it won't fit in the recess.
