Hello (traveller to pickup)

Post by Kustom »

Hi there... Tom from Malta here, a friend of FrankM83's

Been lurking for quite a while but thought I'd introduce myself at last :) I have a Traveller which I'm hoping to convert (with lots of help from a few good friends) into a customised pickup.

Wish you all a good 2009 and thanks for such a great and informative forum!

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Be careful. The pickup has a chassis, the traveller doesnt.

Its a shame Steve Richardson (from Kent) doesn't post on the board any more as he did this conversion some years ago and could supply the information that was needed, dont know if anyone on here is in contact with him.
Cheers

He'd made up a tube sub frame which sat above the rear, IIRC

Hi guys.. thanks for the replies and a happy new year to you all as well :)

I'm aware that the traveller does not have a separate chassis but I think that with enough reinforcement to the chassis and a well planned pickup rear the conversion can still be made successfully (there are a few pickups which have been done that way on Maltese roads and they were actually used for carrying loads around for several years - mine will only be a fun project :)

It will be a slow project with progress being dictated by money, time and other people but i'll post some pictures when progress is made :)

Plans include a stock-ish 1.6 or 1.8 zetec (most probably the 1.8), ford front and rear and a traditional 50's kustom inspired interior (especially if i can get my hands on a good bench seat and manage to get it to not interfere with the location of the gearstick)

Steve's was converted before he got it, but not finished IIRC. It had extra strengthening underneath which I never got to see - he never mentioned a sub frame above, but who knows.
