Tappet chest breather.
On my present engine and the one I am rebuilding the breathers from the tappet chest have been cut in half and rewelded back together. I presume this was to remove whatever was inside them. At the moment my old engine is blowing quite a bit of oil out of this breather, is there anything I can put back in it to slow this down. Had thought of steel wool but dont want bits dropping out of the bottom and getting into oil. Any suggestions?

Strange - well - you can probably stuff in the copper scrubbers - and at least they won't rot! If it's smoking/fuming badly - then you need to connect it directly to the carb - or directly into the inlet manifold via a 1/8" diam restrictor. I did this very successfully with a smokey Mini engine - no more nasty smell and no more oil leaks either! It upset the idle slightly - but i was able to tune it in ok.
