Fuel economy on 948cc

Hi,
Does anyone out there know roughly what MPG you can realistically expect from a standard 948 minor?
My brother has been complaining that his Mog is somewhat juicy, managing around 30 MPG, which is mainly around town.....I have my suspicions as to his style of driving, if you catch my drift!! :o
I plan to 'borrow' the car to do my own comparison as I can get 40-42 out of my 1098 on a longer run, but I am assuming there will be a difference due to gearing etc.
I thought I'd canvas opinion before I go too rash and get the spanners out!

(For those that replied to an earlier question about those pancake airfilters a couple of weeks ago.....it's that same Mog with its ye olde paper filter back!! Horrah!!) :lol:

Our 948 with wife driving mostly round town returns 38mpg regularly....

Each suck from the suck, squeez, bang, blow cycle draws in less juice so that helps.
Low gearing means that around town you probably select a higher gear earlier/at lower revs so you save that way too.
It also depends on the engine, mine is a 1300 that is highly tuned but I still get over 40mpg so driving style is an important factor as well.

Town driving will never give good mpg - ever time you touch the brakes you are wasting energy. Every time you have to accelerate you waste energy again.
On a long journey you spend more time at a constant speed so the mpg is better.
When commuting in a Minor I never got much more than 25mpg, but that was in the Midlands before they built the #### toll road when everything was at standstill every morning and every evening.

My 948 would give 42mpg on a run - mainly because the wheels needed balancing so I kept the speed under 60. My 1098's gave ~35mpg because I had a heavy right foot. As I've got older I've been able to get well over 40mpg out of a 1098.

best i have got out of the 1098 i have is 33mpg. i have now replaced the mechanical fuel pump which was leaking with a modern electric unit. its an austin engine which is why it had a mechanical pump. so im currently seeing how long my fuel is lasting now. ill give you guys (and girls if theres any) an update as soon as i can

I would say 30 mpg around town - likely lots of cold starts/short journeys - is about right.

A friend of mine complains about the poor fuel consumption he gets.
He gave me a lift one day and I realised why.
We were approaching a red light and he was still accelerating!
Some people seem to think that will get there faster if they accelerate hard then brake hard even if they are stuck in a queue.

north hampton - southhampton are they close together ,what about westhampton and east hampton? where do they come in the order of things

Northampton is in the Midlands, Southampton is on the south coast - haven't heard of westhampton or easthampton, but I'm sure someone will prove me wrong in a minute :wink:

Ok well there is nowhere called Westhampton.
Easthampton is a tiny village not far from Leominster Herefordshire which is near the border of Wales.
Southampton is on the South coast and a fair sizes port in Hampshire.
Northampton is in the Midlands and is the county town of Northamptonshire and is approx 110 miles from Southampton

Apparently Northampton and Southampton where both originally just called Hampton, so to save confusion they added north and south to the names, so Northampton isn't in the north but it's called that because it's north of Southampton.
