Numbers on 1098 block

Post by Cam »

Just wondering what the numbers refer to that are stamped onto the block face (where the head sits) on the 1098.

I have an old van engine (10V) which has '2' stamped on the block face in front of each cylinder. My other engine (10MA) has the number '1' in the same place! :o

Any idea what they refer to?

When it was made the bore would be measured & whatever tolerance band it was in would be marked & matching pistons fitted. All done to compensate for wear in the tooling rather than scraping the blocks that are just outside standard tolerances
Ive had an engine that had different No's on the front & rear cylinders. All irrelevant if its been rebored

Yes my block has got 2's and 3's stamped into the top of the block - cant remember exactly but there was one number different to the others. My block is still std along with the crank - its a 10V numbered block.

Original pistons are marked with similar 'grade' numbers - obviously they should match the bore markings!

Thanks folks. Makes sense. The engine I am using (10MA) has had a 20 thou overbore 50k ago, so in that case the numbers are irrelevant.

I wonder what 'sizes' or dimensions the various numbers correspond to? :-?

I have seen lists in some of the manuals - but cant remember if its for 1300s in minis/maestros etc, or ot might be small bore ones
