manifolds

Post by les »

I wonder if you guys can tell me if there is room to fit an MG metro inlet manifold, (water-cooled) to an Ital cylinder head after the original iron inlet/exhaust manifold has had the inlet part cut off?

Les is it worth giving Birmingham a ring as they sell all the alternative manifold/carbs/exhaust systems for all `A` series engines.

les,
Not sure about the Metro alloy manifold - but from memory the MG twin carb manifold does fit over a cut down one piece 1098 manifold. Not that you would want to!
My 1275 ran better with the standard 1098 carb and manifold
Probably a bad set up on the twin carbs, or that less likely that the carb set up wasn't compatible with a restrictive exhaust.

However - only 99% sure about your enquiry - were you refering to the 1098 standard manifold, not the original manifold from the Ital head?

It may depend on what exhaust manifold you are using. cast single exit or cast twin exit? I have only heard of clearance problems when using tubular exhaust manifolds with single carb set-ups because they are designed to clear twin car systems with straight inlet manifolds.
When I mated an alloy inlet and standard minor exhaust I had to make sure that all traces of the 'blend' into the (removed) intake was removed before the two would fit tight against the head. I would imagine the Marina/ital single exit manifold with larger ports would be quite a challenge.
Anyhow, the cast twin-exit manifold will take a 1.5 or 1.75 SU and is supposed to be a good unit and won't be restrictive on a standard or mildly tuned engine.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I would imagine the Marina/ital single exit manifold
Peetee is not the Ital manifold a twin outlet unlike the Marina single.

usually but I don't know if they changed to double at the same time as the Ital was introduced.

Thanx for all your replies, Ray, the manifold that I have at the moment is the Ital twin outlet. I am contempating removing the inlet part and substituting the mg alloy unit, hence my enquiry, although it appears as Peetee said that the twin outlet manifold has a pretty good flow, although I am keen to get rid of the 'hot spot' by seperating.
