Rear suspension

Post by morris62 »

as i started one on front suspension, i thought i'd give the rear ago too.

i know that a escort rear axle has been mention and that of a marina rear axle what differences are involved.

obviously the PCD would be different and as far as i know theres not enough meat on the escort half shafts to redrill for a different PCD.
are there any other alternatives?

If it's just the pcd thats a problem you could re-drill the wheels, like I had done on my Wellers.
Or by fitting the ford front disc brake conversion you can opt for the ford pcd or Morris pcd with those. And if fitting the marina rear axle fit the marina front discs if you can find any.
cheers, Daniel

Midget is just a narrower version of Minor axle. You can fit any axle you like - they will all need work - none are just 'bolt on'.

Ive read recently about the MGB axle, what are the big problems with doing this? can the original spring locations be used? what are the ratios like? presumably the wolsley brakes (or discs) would balance out the beefier rear brakes.
Would inboard telescopic dampers (inboard tops) handle the axle suffecently? how would this cope with say... 200 ponies (as a ballpark) can the "wraparound" on the rear leaves be solved (when the leaves try and wrap around the axle under hard acceleration)

Sorry for all the questions (and thread hijack :D )

I'm sure some have fitted the B axle. If you use 7 leaf traveller springs they are much less prone to winding up - and anti-tramp bars are readily available anyway. But for 200 bhp (!!) you will probably want at least a Panhard or a Watts linkage - and a limited slip diff!

There was one axle that was rumoured to bolt straight onto the Minor leaf springs. I think it was one of the early Capri, or it could have been Cortina.......

Capri Mk 1 3 litre fitted straight on to the springs - just needed new U bolts, prop sorted to match, and the capri handbrake lever (minor one didn't have enough travel). I'm sure I even use the minor (Riley 1.5 in my case) brake pipes.
It is slightly wider though, but not much.

Don't know, none by me. Merely pointing out that there's a lot more to a 200 brake Minor than a big engine

Has anybody fitted an independent rear end before? Is it a lot more work?

I'm sure Jaguar rear suspension units are commonly used on V8 conversions ! For more normal use -just use a well located rear axle.

I've got Ford Sierra XR4 independent rear suspension on the convertable but that has a space-frame chassis too!
Disc brakes and a limited slip diff come as standard.
