Windscreen Rubber

Post by Longdog »

Hi all, does anybody have any useful tips on how to fit a 948 style windscreen rubber with the rigid stainless infill, such as which end to start with trim or middle, thanks.

the only thing i know is the insert has to be fitted first into the rubber surround

on the later ones with the plastic insert this goes in after the rubber has been fitted

These types are a pig to fit and you have to have the correct rubber. ie - the new types of rubber that take the plastic infill won't accept the old stainless seals as the profile is different. If you have a new type of seal you have to use the plastic infill and insert it after the screen is fitted. If you are using the original type of seal you fit the rubber to the glass first, then insert some thin (ish) cord into the apperture for the finisher (in the same way as you would for fitting the screen to the car) then starting from the middle, place the finisher on the rubber with the inner edge pressed in and pull the cord out to pull the rubber over the outer edge of the finisher and work the way around the rubber. Then do the same for the other side. This takes ages to do and then when you pick up the glass to fit into the car it usually all falls out again !!!!

Thanks for advice. My instinct was to try and feed stainless in after rubber so that saves a lot of swearing, although there will still be some no doubt.I'm glad I asked. :D

But if you are trying to re-use an old hardened-with-age rubber, it's going to be very hard going! And certainly don't try it with a laminated screen! Oh - and don't use washing up liquid as lubricant - it's full of salt - gets trapped under the rubber and well .......

OK might be a stupid question but how do u manage to keep the cord inside the rubber while trying to fit it?! as my assumptions is it will continue to fall off!

The cord stays in OK Frank... It's held by the return lip on the seal...
