SOUNDPROOFING

Hi all, Well the plan is to lock myself away all over Christmas and get on with the car (Bah Humbug)
Can anyone who has done a full restoration advise me on what I can use to replace the original, horrible, stinking sound proofing stuck to the roof and on the front bulkhead. Will carpet underlay do.

If you are looking for originality I believe some of the Minor parts suppliers sell replacement soundproofing. Also JLH are developing a pukka kit for the whole car.
I replaced mine with a series of pieces covering the entire bulkhead. Cut from rubber-crumb backed underlay glued into place.
It's not a pleasent job I'm afraid and I wouldn't advocate starting if you're not confident of being able to reach all areas to finish the job.

Hi Paul, I'm currently fitting Dynamat to the interior which is supposed to damp the panels sufficiently to reduce droning from engine exhaust etc.
over this I intend to put back original looking sound proofing available from Newton Commercial.If you want to find out more about Dynamat there are heaps of websites on the subject.

i used this on a van and it was a good product, stopped all the drumming
they are stick on

going to use a simialr product on my car

will use it on the doors, rear quarter panels and under the rear seat

can be used on the floor as well, and then underlay and then carpet

I shall be happy to report back.I am finishing several jobs at the same time so may not test for a while so watch this space.
I don't intend to do the whole floor as it may in future trap moisture but feel that the bulkhead is the biggest generator of transmitted noise anyway, so shall concentrate on that area.

Dynamat is a good product ,but there is a better and cheaper on if you know where to look.

Hi all, before parting with your hard earned, can I suggest a website called sounddeadenershowdown.com this details all the different types and specs available. As a result of independent testing nearly all of the commonly available products are rated here.
It appears you get what you pay for in this area.

With respect, what a waste of time that test was. No tests for sound deadening for a sound deadening product, just temp and adhesive attributes.
We have extensively researched the market place on this topic in order to arrive at a product that is both up to the job and cost a reasonable price. We have found the major supplier to many Prestige cars supplying sound deadening as OE equipment.
Hopefully we will be able to secure a deal for 'off the shelf 'kits but at the moment we can supply the material by the roll.
One roll being the equivalent to just under 4 rolls of Dynamat at a fraction of the cost. Having fitted most of the Dynamat range in the past there simply is no comparison.
As with all of these products you get what you pay for so it will not be cheap, but you will certainly reap the rewards in terms of having a quiet Minor.

Fair enough.My own experience with asphalt based soundproofing is that it comes off so I was quite interested in the new stuff staying put but I am happy to concede that you know more on the subject than me.I'm sure that butyl is best though both in terms of adhesion and performance.
