Compressors

Post by Matt »

Im not sure about painting my sprite, it will be ready for paint soon. I have never used a proper compressor with paint before, but io have used aerosols. What sort of techincal figures should i look for considering i want to paint a whole bodyshell?

Thanks Guys

Hello Matt,
the consideration is the capacity of the compressor expressed in cubic feet per minute. The pressure is really fairly irrelevant as it is in excess of what pressure you will use. The capacity you require depends on the spray gun you have or will have, as this varies. A professional type gun will need a lot of air but is capable of putting a lot of paint on in a short time.
In short you need to look at various guns then suitable size compressors to run it. What will happen if the compressor is too small the pressure drops off as you spray so you need to stop and build up pressure before you can carry on.
I hope this helps.

as already mentioned the compresor determined the CFM..
Type of gun - how much money you want to spen determines that, and it's best to get one where the paint pot has a good seal so you don't drip everywhere!

Mine was £25 from screwfix in a set of 5 attachments! needless to say I'm not intending doing any topcoat with it

Hello Matt,
It is not really the gun that determines the finish, it's all in the preparation. You can get an acceptable gun for not too much money, then you need to see what size compressor you need and see what it costs. Try a local paint factor for advice. I think you'll find that it is only cellulose primer that is porous, not the top coat. If you can afford a professional respray, then two pack is more durable.

if you paint matt watch out for breaking the law.
if over 20/or so psi will get you in to trouble + fumes in atmosphere.
thats why there are the high volume low pressure hplv guns are avalible. gravity feed.

Agreed! It's horrible to look at and for cars of this age it does not look right (far too plastic looking). Go Cellulose every time!

Just hire a van for about £40 or find a mate close-by with a modern car and a tow-ball. It can all be done
