Amount of foam in front seat base.

As part of the re-build I had to repair the front seats. The original webbing had snapped and the previous owner had threaded rope into the frame to support the foam seat base and achieve that feeling of sitting on the floor

As well as new webbing I purchased replacement foam pads which were a direct replacement at around 2" thick. I wasn't happy with the seat base though, it appeared to have quite a bit of slack and was rippled at the edge, no matter how tight it was fitted to the frame.

So today I dismantled the seat bases again and fitted an extra layer of 1" foam, bringing the total thickness of foam to 3". I am pleased with the end result now. What I am wondering is, is it normal to have to fit more foam or could it be that my seat covers have stretched due to the old webbing snapping.

Probably stretched - it looks a bit 'over stuffed' at the moment. But I admit I did the same with my TR7 seats - certainly more comfy that way! It'll settle down after a few miles.

I did the same on my drivers seat as the straps had broken. Tried new straps and new foam supplied by Bull Motiff but felt there was not enough padding so put the old foam underneath new foam and have a very comfy seat. Hope it lasts another 46 years.

On 'becca the webbing hadn't snapped - but had stretched phenominally - and the previous owner'd put an extra layer of foam in the seat to attempt to make up for it. When I replaced the webbing, taking out the foam made the seat way less comfortable and look wrinkly; so it's overstuffed again - like an arm chair
