Tappet Covers

Hi Everybody
2 questions if thats alright.
I have a 1962 Morris Minor 948cc and just wondered if the engine is a late model or a early one the engine number starts off with a 10MA.
And the second question is I am putting new gaskets on the Tappet covers and wondered if there was any washers or anything that go on with the bolts and also if the gaskets are the cork ones.

10MA means it is a 1098 engine - NOT 948! The tappet covers on that engine should be neoprene rubber - and yes - there should be a little seal under a metal cup on the bolts. Don't overtighten these bolts - they just need to be 'nipped up'.

Also do I need to take the Manifold off to do both Tappet Chest Cover gaskets

Easier if stuck to the covers - but do it neatly! You can work under the manifold - bit awkward - but easy enough.

Thanks a lot, just got to get washers and cups because there were none on , it is the engine number that is riveted onto the engine isnt it, it is supposed to be a 948.
Thanks for your help, I wouldn't know how to go on if it wasn't for people like you because I am new to having a Morris Minor, so once again thankyou.

If you look down to the lower left of the engine - just below the tappet covers - you should see a little aluminium plate on the engine - stamped 1100. If you don't have the manual for the car - PM me and I will give you the free download address!

Yes I have seen the plate that says 1100, I have a few books on how to repair and look after it and a Haynes as well.

Would the engine have been changed then since 1962 because all my documents are for a 948

Someone has certainly changed the engine ! Look at the gearbox too - if it has a 'smooth' case it is a 948 box - if it has a 'ribbed' case it is a 1098 box!

Thanks for the address I will have a look later when its working. I will have to inform the DVLA about the bigger engine someone must have done it and not tol them because all my papers that came with the car from new still show it as a 948, so thanks for spotting it for me, by the way whats your first name.

I don't think its a hanging offence not informing the DVLA of an engine change although they can get snotty about incorrect owner's address.
If you have a 948 box keep an eye on it as it is not as strong as a 1098 box and also you may well have a 948 clutch assembly which is smaller than the 1098 unit.

Your insurance company may disagree in the case of a claim.
Get the DVLA told and the insurance company also.

I agree about telling the insurance but the DVLA / police are more interested in having the correct address to send the speeding tickets
