I took nearly a week to fit my Wolseley front brakes. I stripped the swivel pins down and removed the hubs to get the back plates off which were a bit tight as were the brake cylinders. I had the drums skimmed and the back plates modified to take my Minor cylinders. A phone call to a friend in the Minor restoration business secured a set of Wolseley front brake shoes. I found a few brake pipes to join the wheel cylinders but they had the wrong flares so I had two pipes made up.
Whilst I was waiting for bits to arrive I searched through my spares boxes and retrieved all my brake parts and put them together in one large tin. I even found a new unused master cylinder a didn't know I had.
The only parts I was short of were two brake return springs, however by using a Minor spring and a Wolseley spring on each side and fitting the Minor springs in the closer holes in the shoes after a bit of levering I managed to fit the shoes.
After the reassembling and suspension greasing (I always squirt a bit of grease in whilst the wheels are off), I attended to the bleeding ritual.
I had a spot of trouble balancing up the adjusters, the n/s brakes kept dragging, but eventually sorted that out. There was still too much play in the brake pedal for my liking so I took up the master cylinder pedal adjuster a couple of turns, just enough to avoid back pressure.
Now for the MOT. It passed.
Two days later the car started pulling to the left. A strip down of the o/s brakes revealed that the wheel cylinders which had been perfectly ok on the Minor brakes had started leaking and so were replaced.
So far so good.

fantastic wolseley brakes
yes its nice to stick to the item or questions put forward without being overdosed on something that is not relevant at the time,,,grandadLINEARAUDIO wrote:And not a single comment from the pro-disc brigade! Now we're on a rollSuppose there's no chance the Minx backplates fit? Just thinking about when we have robbed up the last Wolseley!
Dunno about the Minx backplates LA - but how many Minxes have you seen lately! But obviously since the shoes look to be right for W use - the backplates must be essentially the same - 4 cylinders with internal adjusters - since the shoes have the notch for the snail cam. And I'm sure I have seen the reapir kits for W cylinders as also being suitable for Minx cylinders! Depends really how the Minx backplates are fixed to the suspension - but that could probably by sorted out without too much trouble. The drums won't be 4" pcd - but again easy enough to re-drill drums ! I look forward to your progress report in this matter!
