Well after two hours of scratching my head I've bodged it so that it works, but I would really like to know a better way of fixing it.
Problem - The rear door mechanism worked from the outside, but not from the inside. It turned out that the holes and pins at either end of the long connecting rod that runs inside the door had worn so that the pull from the inner handle was about 0.5 mm too short to release the catch.
I tried undoing everything and putting it back together so that the holes were as far off centre as the screws would allow. I checked the catch on the rear post, and it wouldn't move further away. I checked the door hinges and post, but they are solid and there is no play in them. I tried bending the long rod to shorten it a bit. I tried packing out the hole at one end of the rod with a bit of tin cut off a can. I considered buying one off ebay, but there is no guarantee that the size will match.
All no good.
In the end I've filed 1mm off the catch on the rear post. The catch overlaps by 10mm so there is no problem of security or safety, but I wouldn't want to keep doing that!
Any ideas or suggestions welcome please ...
