Fuel

Post by Leonardo »

Recently the oil company Total introduced a new type of petrol. It replaced the standard Super 98 Four Star pertrol. It is called Excellium and the people at my petrol station claim it will do in a standard Morris Minor perfectly, without even adding octane 98 additive.
I wonder if this is true. Does anybody in this forum know if Excellium is a good alternative for the Four Star petrol? Does anybody have any experience with the new stuff? Is an octane 98 additive needed?

Kind regards,
Leo, The Netherlands[/b]

Welcome to the forum! Standard minors don't need 98 Octane petrol anyway - they have low Comp Ratio (by modern standards) and run fine on 95. Their main claim seems to be more miles per gallon - and it seems to be only 97 Octane. And - it seems it came out in 2005 ??

Thanks! That's great help!
I am the second owner of my 1967 Morris Minor 1000, I bought her in 1985. I have always been told to use four star petrol and my moggie did well on it. Since four star (super 98) is becoming less and less available in Holland I was looking for alternatives; hence my question.
I will try 95 and see if Moggie will perform better and makes more kilometers per liter!

Thanks again.

Best regards

It won't go 'better' - or do more miles - but it should cost a little less.
Actually - some do report more miles per gallon when using 'super' grade fuel. If you do use the Total fuel and get better mpg (or probably it's kpl for you ??) - please report back!

It won't protect the valve seats as leaded 4-star used to either, you might want to use an approved additive for that (but many people find they don't need it).

This special higher octane fuel is best left to one side as it has cleaning agents in there as well.

The one thing it does not replace either is the lead content of the old Super Gelood/Loodvervanger petrol

Anything over 3 star is wasted on a standard Minor.
