Identifying Brakes

Hi all,

I'm about to take posession of Minor number 2.... it has had a few mods, including a disk brake conversion.

How can I identify what brakes were used in the conversion - as new disks & pads will definatley be needed - he's been stood for 2 years +

I realise I could take pads & disk to a good factors and id them through their books, but is there an easier way ?

I would assume that the disk diameter and the callipers would be a good indications as there are only really 3 types of (easy) disk conversions to do on the minor....

If the discs are vented they would be Sierra as I dont think any other vented ones have been used.
As you say you could take the pads to somewhere and compare them to Marina and Midget ones as they are the only other conversions, most common was the Marina but in recent years its been the Sierra, if its a good few years old probably Marina.

I've also heard of Escort brakes being used! However - if the conversion was 10 years ago, then most likely is Marina. If the conversion was in the last few years, then most probably Ford.
You can probably tell from the wheel / bolt pattern.

Pads shouldn't have suffered due to a couple of years standing, but the disks may have! If they have surface rust all over, it can be easily cleaned off, but if it is uneven (very likely) then it's not recommended to re-use them.

ps - any chance of making your signature pic less wide? It makes all the posts wider than my screen...

Change your screen size to either 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels in size. These are the most commonly used screen sizes and display graphics nicer! You can go higher, but then the desktop can get too spacey and barron.

Hopefully then the posts will not be too big for the screen.

My screen size is fine thanks - There are other things going on simulataneously, so when I view this site the Window size is the same as a 15" monitor. The only time I have to waste time scrolling left and right is when a certain extra wide signature pic prevents the messageboard from fitting in the standard window....
Matt might run squinty winow size, but at least his pic is a sensible width

Any chance of cutting the Volvo off?? It would be much more convenient for me and for ppl who only run a 15" monitor?

Sig is now substantially shorter....... althuogh the Volvo may be replaced with the OTHER moggie in the near future.

My next question is back to the brake question.. What brake conversion allows the use of 'proper' moggie wheels, as thats what I have.

Well, speaking from experience, the Sierra vented disc conversion works with the standard wheels, as will pretty much any drum conversion. I would assume that the Marina/Midget conversions would be OK too.

none of them do - they have to be modified to use Minor wheels.
As they've been converted to Minor PCD (a nice mod

) then that doesn't shed any light on what they are..

Looks like its hours down the spares shop, drinking their coffee, smoking their fags and reading their braking catalogues.

The last owner had the car 10 years, it was fully refurbed in 1990..... so I'm plumping for Marina / Ital.... God help me when I need bearings !

As to identifying the servo..... I don't know what I'm going to do there !

Stick up a pic of the brakes.. It might be easy to recognise for the disk braked boys.
The limit of my knowledge is that if it is pin sliders with a 7mm female hex, then it's 90's Ford

There's not too many makers of old English servos - stick on some good pics and I'll ask my (ex AP Lockheed / Lucas Girling) colleagues to have a guess.
When you know the maker, then there are uysually codes or dots which denote the type, and hence which seal kit you need.

Jim take the pads into your local Halfrauds and compare them to a Marina set or Sierra set as they are usually on the shelf.
