The wear will be on the little dog teeth on the second gear itself and on the syncroniser hub that engages the gear, the baulk ring will be obviously worn too. The parts are not cheap - it's often not worth the cost for a rebuild. Often better to just look for a known good box and fit that.

I can understand what you mean, there are fors and against with both. With a rebuild you know that it is a good box but it can be pricey. With a second hnd one its cheaper but you never really know if its good untill its fitted (like the one i have just fitted). Its running now so its given me a bit of thinking time, just as well because my p38 has just thrown a suspension fault. Don`t you just love cars!!

Not too sure if new 2nd gears and syncronisers are readily available anyway. There was a lad who specialised in gearbox spares - but I lost the link when I had to wipe my hard drive.
P38 - hmmm - is it an airplane (Lightning) or a Gun (Walther) ??

Thanks for the info.

There was a series of articles recently in Practical Classics on re-building your own gearbox - and they used one of these (a Midget one actually, but virtually the same) as the illustrated example. Might be worth getting some back-issues? I can tell you exactly what issues they were if you want.

I re-built my Midget gearbox myself - very satisfying, quite a fun job, certainly do-able at home. Check out the prices of the parts you'll need though, as sometimes a re-con box works out cheaper - not as much satisfaction though!

Cheers :D

I will strip my old box down when i get chance and see if that is repairable. I may be needing those back issue numbers luxo, never taken a gearbox apart before.

Ah, now when I did mine it was a few years ago and there was a company (in Manchester IIRC) that did gearbox "re-build" kits for all the common boxes, the kit came bubble wrapped with all the parts you'd replace as a matter of course - bearings, seals, synchro rings, gaskets etc. and so I bought one of these, the only additional part I needed to specify was the layshaft/gear, as this was fubar on my box, but they supplied that too. It was a great scheme, I was really impressed, and it all worked spot-on.

Unfortunately, I don't think they are in business now - however, I'm sure all the parts are available individually, the article in PC showed the work being done by a gearbox re-con place (near me, as it happens, in Leatherhead) and they must get the parts from somewhere - or don't the usual Minor spares suppliers do gearbox parts too?

Personally, the original box on the OP's car sounds a bit terminal - I'd be tempted to get a working but worn box from elsewhere, and re-build that - just a personal view, as it might work out cheaper if the original box has got a LOT of damage, and needs lots of expensive parts.

Aye - rebuild 'kits' are about - but they don't usually include the new 2nd gear which is what's really needed - and possibly also a 1st/2nd hub if that's worn too.
