Megasquirt in my opinion is horrible to use!

I have made a loom and played around with the software on a Megasquirt version 2.2 but am really unimpressed with it. I think the software is awful and is not very intuitive to use. I will have to get the car running soon (not mine) and am really not looking forward to it.

My own car (Fiat 2.0 Turbo Minor) has an Emerald ECU on it and have found it very easy to use and is quite intuitive.

I have also used other ECU software, Easimap5 (for Vauxhall engines typically), not very easy to use if you don't have the mapping box to go with it, especially when pulling over 8000rpm on a rolling road!

Had a play around with DTA software, haven't made the loom for that one yet and I expect I will have to get that car running one day, again not that easy to change settings live without the mapping box.

Had a brief play around with OMEX software before I bought my Emeraald ECU, can't remember much about that one but obviously wasn't too impressed as I bought the Emerald.

The problem with some ECU software is that it has been created by a boffin/nerd and is probably very easy for them to use but for everyone else is a nightmare! The Emerald has been made by people who use it everyday and so need it to be quick to use properly. I have no connection with Emerald, just a happy customer.

If you enjoy soldering things together you can make a relatively cheap ECU with the Megasquirt and have the satisfaction of making your own, but the likely hassle of getting it to work properly will easily offset that!

Personally if cost is an issue, I would save up for longer to get a proper one.

Im just toying with ideas at the moment. I havent decided on an engine yet. Ive heard a lot of good info and a lot of good opinions. The one thing I cant find is a bullet point list in plain english of its capabilities. Im not scared of reading pagve after page of tech bumpf, or trawling through pages of settings and adjustments but I just wanna know what my limits will be with each version.

Im toying with the idea of a few VW engines out of more modern cars, ranginf from 6cyl to 4 cyl and petrol and derv!

Well it won't do diesel engines and it won't take info from knock sensors (only really needed for pressure charging) though I think that's in development. People have hooked up a knock sensor to a light or done and run turbos by the seat of their pants so to speak.

It can control fuel injectors and spark for any number of cylinders up to about 16.

It can read map sensors or throttle position sensors, and lambda (oxygen) sensor in exhaust, water and air temp.

Early version 1 uses something like Ford EDIS or GM DIS or Bosch to read timing and control spark. V2 I think can read directly, control coil over plugs individually.

There is a lot to learn with this stuff. I've built one but not fitted and I still don't know a fraction of what I should.

It's easier to use it on an engine that is already fuel injection than to convert a carb engine and buy and fit all the sensors. But if the engine is already fuel injection, if not being tuned, the standard engine management system is probably the best thing to use anyway
Some help here:

Best bet is to see if someone has already got your preferred engine up and running and has uploaded a map. It gives you a starting point.

thats whatI was planning on doing.
guess Ill have to set my heart on an engine and then bite the bullet with the best for that application.
Now just got to:
find somewhere for mona, find a new project car do everything to it, fit the engine and then learn some new swear words to conquer it!

I was thinking of going down that route myself (and about to start a new topic till I came across yours) when I came across these people

http://trigger-wheels.com/store/index1.html

they do a kit for the A series or just the module.

I am hoping to go to a 1275 sometime next year, with the aim of building a decent engine for the car, and was thinking of going electronic on the way.

It's not that I dislike a dizzy (I actually think they're pretty easy to setup etc), it's just that once electronic's installed and set up, it's relatively maintenance free (though I'm sure some'll disagree).

I know what you mean about info. I'm an engineer, so reasonably technically savvy, but sometime's there's just too much data on the web  and it's not all pointing in the right direction!

I was considering fuel injection as well, but that just may be a step too far for me!
