anti rattle??

Post by callyspoy »

hi guys and gals. right my gearstick rattles something chronic when i am in driving. most noticeable in 4th at motorway speeds...and maybe a little bit more. but i digress...
is it probably a simple thing like the anti rattle spring etc? if so, where is said spring located, as haynes exploded view...well...there are loads of bits in the selector and i get confused! please help!
oh yes...and the gearbox is known as a good one, as i've had it in there for a while, only changed the rear end of it! :-)
cheers

I was getting bad vibration through the gearstick when the UJ was starting to fail. It might be worth checking :)

Here is a pic from the microfiche, ther should be a spring, a cap and a rubber O ring.

On my 948 the O ring was missing and it rattled for England.

thanks for the responses guys. dru, as i said, there was no vibration before i took the tailshaft off the box and i did the conversion in a day, so it would be mental if the uj went crazy in 6 hours! but...if nothing else works i will look into it!
roger...are the spring and cap loose under the stick? if so i deffinitely do not have them! can you put a link to the bits on esm please...sorry, i don't want to buy the wrong bits!!

I thought you had the long stick lever ? Or have you now fitted a remote control ? One trick used on Minis (very similar set up) to stop the rattle is to slide a rubber tube over the gear stick. Seems to 'damp' out the vibrations.

All of the above applies but if you are finding it hard to change gear too it could be the cover plate coming loose.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
