Minor Exhaust Flatulence......

Post by Luxobarge »

Now, some may not agree with this, but in my opinion one of the most endearing characteristics of the Minor is the parp-parp "farting" noise they typically make on the over-run, e.g. when changing gear etc.

Except that ours doesn't do it! It's a pretty bog-standard 1965 car, with unmodified 1098 engine, and it has what looks to be a brand new stainless exhaust on it.

Anybody know what makes them do this, and why mine doesn't? Anything I can do to make it "fart"?

Just curious - hope nobody takes offence at my description, it just seems the right word, eh?

Thanks!

Are you sure it hasn't got a double silencer system on it? That will spoil the exhaust noise although some cars seem to have more of a rasp than others. I recon it is down to the engine timing

Does it have just the one silencer?

Did someone say on here recently that if the exhaust was an inch longer it wouldn't "fart". They felt maybe the design engineer had a sense of humour. Maybe your exhaust is longer than the original?

Hmmm, interesting - I think it's a two-box system, I'll have a check (haven't had to get under the car much so far, and I can't remember! )

Interesting about the "one inch too long" idea too - the tailpipe certainly looks long-ish, I'd have no problem with cutting an inch off to see if it helped!

Thanks a lot! :D :D

Twin box tend to be larger bore as well... what kind of manifold have you got?

I'm not so sure about the length issue - my 71 pick up does it really well and the exhaust after the silencer is very different.

I'll swap my extremely loud single box stainless system for a two box stainless system. My traveller farts so loud on over run the car behind falls back a hundred yards, probably as the driver fears an imminent explosion. :D

Sounds like a win-win situation to me! :)

Hehe - well thanks for all the replies, I just had a double-check and in fact it IS a single box system, not double!!!

So does that mean I do have the potential to fart, as it were?

Shall I try cutting off 1" from the tailpipe?

Manifold is standard cast iron affair for this 1098 engine - are there different sorts? Mechanically, this is a totally standard engine, so why doesn't it fart?

Thanks a lot for your help - even though most of you probably think I'm slightly mad.....

I don't think that will make a difference.

Check your engine timing and vacuum unit. The more advance, the bigger the fart. That's my theory anyway.

OK, I wound the ignition timing up a turn and a half, but no difference - haven't had time to check it properly on a strobe yet, but it's more advanced and still not farting!!!

Cheers! :D :D
