WHAT SORT OF WORK IS INVOLVED IN A ALTERNATOR UPGRADE ON MORRIS CHEERS

1 - Buy alternator
2 - Buy shorter fan belt
3 - Make rear mounting bracket
4 - Fit alternator
5 - Fit shorter belt and tension
6 - Re-wire as per diagram below. (courtesy of MT).

A Lucas 16 ACR will be fine on a standard car

Yes - 16/17/18 ACR is ideal. Usually get them for £1 at autojumbles - I refuse to pay more! Be aware they are 'handed' - Ford units mount on the other side of the engine. The front plate can be rotated to swap them over - but it's much easier to just buy the correct hand in the first place ! You also need to make a longer bracket to support the rear the rear of the alternator (because it's shorter than a dynamo) - although some just use a bit of threaded bar - this tends to allow the alternator to droop - and the pulley is not then running true with the other two - which leads to problems with belt and/or bearings.
