wireless internet

Post by callyspoy »

hi guys. just a quickie. i was clearing out an office where i work, and there was a wireless router that had been left behind. my question is this...is it of any use to me??
we have a new pc at home and am wondering if it would have built in receiver for it, but wouldn't know how to check...so...any input would be greatly appreciated!

even if you dont have a wireless card, if your desktop needs a Wireless card (pci type) they are 10 to 15 quid at places like Aria and CCL.
fitting it is a case of opeing the case, stuffing the card in the only slot thats shaped right and sealign her up. Most cards are recognised my windows. Then its just a case of logging into the router and doing all the security stuff.
If theres a password on the router then try resetting it (usually a button beneath it) and often you can do a full reset* and this will make sure that the password is removed and the "ip adress" is reset to original. then you just need to search for the router, type its IP into internet explorer, you will then be 'in' the router and from there you can do all the password stuff.

*you can see how to do a full reset by googleing the router model and finding a manual online. The manual will also have the default IP adress in it for the next step.

p.s. make sure its unwanted ;) remember pilfering is baaad :P

do the reset, this will let you log in on default settings (in the manual) and set up any security you want.
The bare minimum is to do a reset and then leave it "open" this will work, but be available for any one to use.

Im not explaining this very well am i lol

basically, once reset it is in full default mode. This is unsecure but easy.
Once you log in you can change security settings to make things 'safer'

I have an Orange Livebox - came free (yes , from Orange) - and works a charm! It also gives me a second phone line and free phone calls all over the world with VoIP. Great value!

Next house we want 4 garages at least, a big kitchen. We'll sleep in the cars! And a lovely big workshop! :D

Agreed somewhere a bit quieter would be nice.
4 garages now that would be something but round here having one is considered good.
Cheers
