Trav to pickup???

Post by polo2k »

Hi all,

Im sure ive seen people discussing this before but cant find the posts.

Whats involved in converting a trav to a pickup? The reason im wandering is im thinking of a nex project and original pickups are a bit too much wedge!
Ill be doing to work with some help from "rob mate" so pictures would be invaluable.

Tahnkyou

Finding a way of making a Trav rear strong and rigid enough to support a rear axle. I'd imagine. You probably know already that the pick-ups have a seperate chassis, the Travs not

i have done one never again massive amount of welding to strengthen chassis doing cab back which needs extending to give suffisiont leg room. besure you realy want to do this as you are soon at a point of no return and own a pile of scrap you need to be very deddicated to do this, i wish you the very best of luck,,,grandad.

:D Real pick-upd are based on the 4 door dimensions, so 5 3/4 inches less than the Trav with a wall that means you can.t push the seat back...

Real pick ups have a proper cab back, which adds more then the 5 3/4" depth.

If you're after a pick up project, best bet is to get a pick up IMHO.
Mine cost me £550 17 months ago (came with a short but very suspect MOT) - it needed a heck of a lot of work for next MOT but all that work was worth it.

The traveller floor pan does not have the strength to do the job, so by the time you've modified it to act like a chassis, you'd be better off with a chassis.

The single advantage you'll get is the slightly bigger cab doors. It won't have the classic looks of a steel sided pick up, but if you want something quirky then it is an option.

Theres a lot to consider there. does anyone have any pics or specific info about the strenghtening, i.e. where does it need it? I was thinking of basically fabricating a suplementary "box section structure" to support a rebuilt rear monocoque.

If I convert a trav I may well construct a custom cab rear as I understand they are hard to come by.
