gear lever colour

Hi,

Once again I turn to the experts' forum to clear my doubts!

I need to paint my '54 series II's gear lever. I already have the correct gear lever knob (the early round one) so it would be a shame to have the lever painted the wrong colour! Is it black or gold?

when I refitted mine I wrapped it in loom tape (the fuzzy kind), I know its not original but it fits in nicely and might make winter driving a little more comfortble.
