5 speed questions

Post by Matt »

Hi Guys

Have aquired very nearly everything I need to do a 5spd conversion using a type 9 box and the cast bellhousing.

Its a 1275 ital engine, but will be using a modified 1098 backplate and flywheel.

I have a couple of questions...

At the moment I have a hydraulic clutch (marina pedal box) and I would quite like to keep it! Given that I cuurently dont have a clutch fork, and I intend to use the ford release bearing and a complete ford clutch has anyone got any suggestions about the best way/ a good way to do it?

How different is a 1275 midget clutch fork to a 1098 minor one?

What is involved in shortening the handbrake lever?

Whats the best way to mount the speedo cable? Is an angle drive (ie. rotates the cable throuh 90 deg) a good idea as the cables seem to break fairly easily!

Thanks :)

hacksaw or angle grinder! Remove the plastic button first though!
I'm not sure of exact dimensions but you could ask Jay to measure his (that was modified a couple of weeks ago).

I'd guess to use the standard Ford parts and connect the hydraulics - It's an interesting one as I'm liklely to do that on the Marina.

where to break down next?

Have you adapted the ford bellhousing to fit too the engine or viseversa ? you may be able to use the ford fork on the original type bearing & modifiy the end to take hydraulics instead of a cable. I dont know how easy it would be to adapt the minor fork to the ford release bearing. or go concentric slave
If the speedo cable is long enough it can be routed easily enough the problem I had with mine was that it wasnt going into the drive smoothly & caused the cable to bind & snap the drive . The replacement was better but needed slight modification

If you use the Ford clutch cover, then you need a concentric release bearing - Using a bearing on a release fork (non concentric) will wreck the clutch cover in approx 20k miles.

After reading about Cams experience with his I was always going to go concentric... I.e a standard sierra beaing on the type 9 without the sleeve removed.

Mogwai... I have a proper conversion bellhousing. Best Idea I have come up with is to modify the ford release arm because the sierra/transit etc arms seem to all be cable. I was going to weld a new pivot on the far end and modify the other end to match the slave. I am thinking about a mini slave, or making a braket to hold the marina one
