Exhaust options for flatdeck LCV

Post by morrisman1 »

im nearly at the stage where i need an exhaust pipe for my flatdeck LCV. i was thinking a 5" tube with a 8" tip on the end. !!!! More sensibly i think i will go with a 2" or 2.5" system with one straight through muffler in the middle under the passengers floor pan. i have the opportunity to do a couple of options so this is what i have thought of:
~ exhaust exits at rear of ute
~ exhaust exits in front of passenger side rear wheel
~ exhaust exits in front of driver side rear wheel

i know that standard, these things exited on the driver side infront of the rear wheel but i have never seen how the pipe is arranged ie. what chassis rails it goes under of over if you know what i mean.

is there any system which works better than another one at all? i heard that having it exit by the wheel can cause droning from the exhaust hitting the tread pattern. it will be quite a sporty sound but i want to keep it pretty quiet as we have tough regulations when the car isnt running standard exhausts here.

thanks in advance!

It's possible to get a larger bore exhaust with standard routing - the bore will fit 1300 Marina manifold. Over here they are available 'off the shelf' for saloons and LCV's.
The LCV version is same as saloon layout until it gets just behind the cab. There it bends 90° and goes across to drivers side and exits in front of the wheel. The pipe should be further out than the wheel so it shouldn't blow on to the tyre.

Even 2" is too large unless it's a full race 1275 engine. For a 1098 engine - even modified - keep it down to 1 3/4" maximum. Side or rear - it's up to you.

im running a datsun a12 engine remember.

ill get quotes for each setup and think about it. i dont want to have a pipe too short so the right side exit might be the go. that way i have more room for mufflers aswell as i can put one in the middle where it crosses the chassis

Seriously - you are running that on the road with no silencer - just a straight pipe ? My racing Mini had no silencer - when started up at home to put it on the trailer, the noise was fearsome ! Complaints from all around forced me to slide a silencer over the tail pipe when working at home.

As for side exit pipes - don't make it stick out to much... My scar has faded now but the memory of a hot exhaust pipe burning into my leg is still vivid (I was getting something on the back seat of the 4 door during a long drive)

i spoke to an exhaust shop today, i think for simplicity i will go with a left side exit exhaust. i need to put a baffled muffler in instead otherwise it will be too noisy to pass the restrictions (95db)

Apologies to morrisman1 for a quick thread hijack :-?

What diameter exhaust should I be looking at for a Marina 1300 engine? will a standard 1098 exhaust do or will it choke the 1275 engine?

Neat - do tell us if it 'trumpets' - the standard Minor 'trumpeting' is because the silencer is so close to the manifold - and you have retained that feature! It shouldn't matter what engine it is - gas flow is gas flow.
And yes - a 1275 will run on a standard exhaust - but it will be horribly choked at anything other than light throttle. I think some suppliers sell a larger bore exhaust to match the larger bore exhaust manifold.

the 1275 runs better than most people would expect with a Minor 1098 carb and exhaust. High revs are restricted (not that I could tell) but mine pulled extremely well.

Indeed- it will have bags of low end torque - but will run out of steam at the to end. However - this set-up with a low numerically final drive (ie 3.7) may well give the best economy.

indeed! That's what I was planning for the pickup but the tired old 1098 engine is still running happily, so no need for the 1275 engine yet.
