Yes, you need to purchase your Free tax disc at the post office in the normal way as this proves that you have insurance and MOT.

it even better when they do ask for money then you politely tell them no. The expression on the persons face before you explain is fantastic!!!!

it took me a while to get my head round it but the up shot is, ALL privately owned cars on the road must be taxed, its just that us special people get the tax at no charge. :D

Being cynical, having to get a tax disc also leaves the door open in the future for an administration charge of say.....£15, £20, £30, spin the wheel. Lets hope they don't think of it just yet! The DVLA must be nashing their teeth at my family- wife disabled/tax exempt, me driving a moggy!!

I did once ask for a 6 month free tax disc.
:)
Caused no end of consternation, took me ages to admit I was only joking.

Already thought of - DVLA wanted an admin fee for everything - every time you change address, tax your car, declare Sorn change the color......
FHVC protested loudly and the idea seems to have disappeared........for now.

this post made me remember a little relevant fact.

There is only 1 car in the uk that can legally be on the road with no number plates. this is due to its owner.

Who owns it???

It works best when you reach the front of a long queue in the post office and in a loud clear voice ask "CAN I HAVE MY FREE TAX DISC PLEASE?"
You can of course do the whole thing on line but not so much fun.
On the down side you may remember that a free tax disc was available on a rolling 25 years, one of the few decent things the last tory government did. The first thing the labour government did unannounced was to freeze it at 1973. I bet that p----d off a lot of MGB owners etc.

I think we get "free" tax because of the extra admin costs of cashing in our tax every winter.... how much would they charge to cash in your tax then?!?

I'm just gutted as my Van isn't tax exempt :(
