Fume breather???

hi guys im on here for my dad he has a traveler with a 1098 motor,
he says it has a fume breather leak? it has the later style one that rise up and over the inlet 2 the carb

oil is dripping out of the bottom of it??

is this a crank issue? he just said he a35 van looses oil down the breather aswell?

any idears guys Col

Where is the breather situated on the engine? I've just looked at the old 1098 engine in my garage and the breather is on the front tappet chest cover which by its design shouldn't cause any leakage problems unless the cover gasket is leaking.
If the breather is on the timing chain cover on the front of the engine (normal on a 1275 engine) it works by drawing fumes out of the sump via the carb. Check that you have air tight seals on either end of the rubber pipe between the breather filter and the carb.

Worn engine causing excesive pressure in the crankcase will cause fumes to leak out just about anywhere on these engines. Simple test - hot engine, idling - take off the oil filler cap. If there is a plume of smoke/fume then engine is worn and really needs a re-bore and new pistons - although it 'may' be possible to keep it going for a while with just a set of piston rings.

just pulled this pic from ebay the red cyrcle is were it is ment 2 be leaking

You have a later engine than mine as I don't have the canister. Is it dripping from the bottom of the canister? If so get a replacement tappet cover, preferably on with just an up and over breather pipe. Then seal the carb end of the breather or you will be running weak.

yep its filling u and leaking at the canister

Must be very badly worn - try the test I suggested earlier.

You shouldn't get oil leaking from the bottom of the oil trap cylinder unless it's rusted through.

It will have rust pinholes. The oil trap fills with oil to the same level as the bottom of the sloped feed pipe into the trap. It will have rusted from the outside.

Two easy fixes

1: Clean the body of the trap and wrap some gaffa tape round it.
2: sand clean and braze/solder the pinholes then repaint.

Or there is so much fume etc coming out the top it's running down the side!

hmm got in from work and the old man said HMM it had a rust hole in the bottom Doh
