Around town - could very well be right. Longish runs you 'may' get 40 mpg, although some claim better - I doubt the accuracy of their mileometers! Or - they are driving around at 40 mph!!

You do have to thrash them a bit to keep up with modern trafffic. The 948 I'm playing with just now is returning around 30mpg.

John, wash your mouth out with 20/50! Just slow down a bit - no more wheel spins in the carpark

My 1098 was averaging around 37mpg and I know my speedo reads slow. This is a mix of town and motorway (60mph max). I'm just putting a 1275 in so I'm not sure if it will be better or worse !!

Well my 1275cc with mixed town driving returns low 30's with an iffy engine and carb, maybe your carb is badly worn as this can creep up on you over a period of time.

I get 38 mpg average, driving to work, shopping and the trip to college (50 mile each way dual carriage way).

On a long run, I get 44mpg. If you arent getting these firgures from a Minor, then either the car isnt running right or your right foot is too heavy! Driving style and maintainance go a long way to helping fuel economy.

Speedo is fairly accurate, having compared it to my 944.

In 1959, when the Mini first came out, we had one in the workshop under warranty for heavy fuel consumption. No computers to check it against of course, so we made up a test tank. On mixed running, the Mini averaged 32mpg. When we reported this to BMC, they said this was within their parameters, and would not meet the claim.
When the owner asked our foreman how he could get the 50mpg that others were claiming, he said "Sir, you do the same as they do-- you lie about it!"

I've had mid 40's out of a 1098 but that was with a higher diff. It actually managed 47mpg on the start of 2007 LEO but was running so lean it was missfiring! When I worked out the mpg it only took me a few seconds to work out the cause of the missfire

'Around' town can mean many things. When you are sitting in stationary traffic you are achieving 0mpg so if the traffic is bad, 25mpg is good.

blue smoke coming out of the exhaust.
blue/black when burning oil
white/grey/black when running too rich

There's 2 wildly different ways:
1) Fit it in and run it. If it runs sweet as a nut and oil pressure is high even when driven hard on a hot day, then it's good.
2) Strip it and look for honing marks in the bores and to see if the piston machining marks have been rubbed off. Measure crank carefully and inspect the shells.

If you're geting blue smoke out of the exhaust it usually means the pistons are shot.

unless it's at start up and after an overun as that is likely to be valve guides.
