Renewing valve springs

I am renewing valve springs and have been supplied with new springs that seem considerably longer than originals. Yes, I'd expect them to be longer than the old worn ones, but not this long. My Haynes Manual and Leyland Manual quote approx 1.75" for the 1098cc engine, but the ones supplied (by Charles Ware, Bristol) are well in excess of 2". Any of you know the correct length for new (standard single) valve springs for the 1098 head?

These sound like the springs for the later 1275 engine which are same diameter but longer as you describe. DO NOT use them on your 12g202 head - they will be far too strong (because of the ridiculous compression required to make them fit your shorter valves) and may even coil bind with disasterous results! Send them back and demand the correct springs - and a refund for your return postage!

Thanks for the info - in fairness to Wares, they are being very helpful and are doubling checking their stock/correct spring part numbers etc. They will call me on Monday and hopefully sort the problem out.

Yes Roy is correct and to quote a supplier

There is nothing special about these A Plus single valve springs. The valves were a longer fitted length but fitted the later 998 and all 1275 versions.

Ehhhh? Only the 1275 has longer valves - and longer springs to match!
Surprised anyone would buy parts from a vehicle restorer such as CW (who may be likely to mark up parts bought in from others) - better to use the specialist parts suppliers such as MOSS or Bull Motif.
