My car sounds like a sewing machine!

Today, I was happily driving 'Pidge' down the M27 all warm and cosy inside the car against a rather gusty wind I hasten to add and just as I turned off the motorway and headed nearer to home she jerked and started to sound like a sewing machine (rather more like a machine gun or VW beetle!) I went absolutley belistik!!!!!!

So in the pouring rain I got out - the engine was still running but I was still getting a VW sound esp when she was reved up! Intrestingly I heard a spitting noise from the air filter - so that came off and got a face full of petrol at a certain cycle. So wet with rain and fuel I stomped to the rear of the car to see what the exhaust had to give me.......all to report was a slight intermittent 'putt'. FUME!!!!

What topped it off even worse, that afternoon I had my head underneath the bonnet re-adjusting the tappets (last week I replaced the head gasket) and adjusting the carb!

Thank goodness I was nearly home but any ideas guys would be great

it's all very difficult from here! Spitting from the Carburettor is
usually a sign of a weak mixture.. If you recently replaced the
head gasket then it is vital that you retighten the cylinder head
nuts within 500 miles and,while you are at it the manifold to block
nuts as these will bed in rapidly. In short retighten every nut which
was undone during the cylinder head work.

Damn Damn Damn! No luck....however the AA were very helpful towing me back home - he suspects the valves. I told him about the possible head nuts being to slack and I was surprised when he had a torque wrench in his van and checked them. I will keep you posted to see what the problem was when she gets booked into me local garage!
