Rev Counter Wiring

Having now got the trav its MOT I figured it was time to start installing stuff. One of the first things is going to be an electronic rev counter.

But, in having had it for so long I seem to have lost the instructions about how to wire it in. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There are 4 wires coming from the back, Brown, Grey, Black and Green,

now my guess so far is that brown is the live feed, grey is lighting and black is earth. But that is really just a guess and I have no idea where to wire the green to.

In 'Ford' colours it would be:

Black = GND
Brown = Live
Grey = Lighting
Green = Coil

Infact, green is always the coil wire. It seems a universal standard, seemingly the only one anyone agreed on.

So where do I plug it onto the coil then?

I cant remember which side you connect it to.
Only one will give the right reading though, if that helps.

With a negative earth car and gauge, you connect the rev counter to the negative side of the coil (the same side that connects to the points).

Just to confuse things further automotive things with german influence have brown as an earth & in your photo the brown wire looks to have an eye terminal on it. recomend check with a multimeter the earth wire is likely to have continuity with the body of the instrument

Looking at the position of the wiring the earth appears to be the black wire. The terminal on the brown, I assume, where it was previously used to take power from the battery.....

I strongly suggest you don't follow suit. Do take the feed from a switched fused point somewhere. (On most Leyland cars that is a green wire - who said that is usually the tachometer sensing colour?)

Brown is the normal +12 volt feed on most old car wiring harnesses - and black the negative earth connection. Feed the power through the ignition switch - you don't want it draining current all night long!

I have a 2" dia Yazaki rev counter which I have just dug out of my spares box and have lost the instructions..
It has a different combination of colours :-
Red - panel light
Red - earth
Black? Blue? Yellow?

I would like to fit it in my Traveller, alternator, no control box, neg earth
Does anyone know what goes where??

Hi I was looking thro and a guy called Mike asked the same question but no reply I have an old 82mm Yazuki rev counter and just wanted to fit it to check things etc Mines Neg earth with alternator and electronic igntn The rev counter as its older has 3 wires only as the red wires for oops I typed a naughty word illumination are missing a yellow a Blue and a Black
Presuming the black is Earth but can anyone help please ref the other two so I dont cook it . Thanks for any info. John
