Hi. No bigginger would appear to be right and make sense about the third lead thing. It does indeed make sense that its attached to the advance mechanism from near the distributer.
The petrol is leaking from the base of the float chamber as I lost one of the inserts or seals from the jet nozzle tube underneath. I've ordered a new part so should be fixed in a while.

Update ......
I got the carb service kit from Birmingham and fitted a new jet hose etc and refitted the carb to the car. Now I have a new problem.... first of all it appears I'am back to square one as the car won't catch still, but I'am assuming thats just a petrol problem in the carb somewhere so when I get the time next weekend I'll take the carb off again and make sure everything is moving.
But..... the new problem is the electrics
. - everytime I go to turn the ignition on I lose all power instantly and have to disconnect both battery terminals and start again. What happens is that when I turn the key once the dash lights go on, then when I turn it again to start the ignition I hear a whine (probably from the starter) and then the power goes. Is this an earth problem ? ????? Help....

This does sound like the battery is too flat to continue.
If you have to take it to a garage for a charge don't let them do a fast charge as these tend to damage the battery.
Get it trickle charged if you can ( best done overnight).
When batteries are marginal and/or the starter motor is drawing too much power you get to the position where ALL the power is being used to turn the engine over and none is left to provide sparks and make it start.
At this stage we have the "luxury" of the starting handle so we supply the power to turn the engine and all the battery has to do is make the sparks.
Only joking about the starting handle it's got me out of trouble many times

She lives !!!! The battery appeared to be ok, but I charged it overnight again just to be sure. I also cleaned all the contacts with wire wool on the body, leads and battery terminals to make sure there was good contact. Put it all back together and she worked
Now she can actually drive out of her corner without having to be pushed.
