Nope - my guess is someone was trying to stop an oil leak...

How very odd! Must have a look at a gearbox tomorrow and see what normally sits there.

thanks, bmc. Seems a previous owner just drilled a hole in the middle of nowhere, as far as I can make out  I'll be interested to hear your conclusions!

I'd guess because someone thought adding a breather would be a good idea.

Either that or they had a drip tray, a scavenger pump and wanted somewhere to feed the oil back into the gearbox... ;-)

I'd worry just like Dennis mentioned, unless you find out otherwise. If it doesn't leak from the breather, then yes it's fine!

It might have been used as an easy filler with a neck and cap on it into the car. I'd be tempted to remove it or /and block it up :D

If a previous owner "just drilled a hole" I'd be concerned about swarf inside the box, but then if it's not rumbling, don't fix it. A good flushing might not be a bad idea anyway.

It's slightly easier to change the gearbox oil before you put the floor back down, BTW.

OK, stoooooooopid question coming up:

[brace yerself, Effie]

How and with what do I "flush" the gearbox?

Usual oil, just poured into the fill hole with drain plug removed?

Sorry to be a numpty

I suspect he just meant to change the oil. The gearbox doesn't tend to get gunged up with carbon and sludge in the way the engine does.
