thanks, bmc. Seems a previous owner just drilled a hole in the middle of nowhere, as far as I can make out I'll be interested to hear your conclusions!
I'd guess because someone thought adding a breather would be a good idea.
Either that or they had a drip tray, a scavenger pump and wanted somewhere to feed the oil back into the gearbox... ;-)

I'd worry just like Dennis mentioned, unless you find out otherwise. If it doesn't leak from the breather, then yes it's fine!

If a previous owner "just drilled a hole" I'd be concerned about swarf inside the box, but then if it's not rumbling, don't fix it. A good flushing might not be a bad idea anyway.
