SORN!

Hi all, I'm just wondering what experiences anyone has had regarding SORNs. I bought my Minor in May and sent off for the V5c, once I got this back I applied for a SORN online and recieved an e-mail saying a letter of confermation would arrive in about 6 weeks. As I had not recieved it after 6 weeks I phoned DVLA and was told that because the car is tax free it doesnt need a SORN!
However I still see older cars advertised on e-bay as being on a SORN. Any advice please. Thanks, Croft
Oh my Minor is a J plate 4 door registered 1971

Well I've no idea who you spoke to at the DVLA but they must have been the cleaner or doorman cause all cars need to be sorned if they are off road - its the law and you will be fined if it's not done. I suggest you get back onto the DVLA and speak to someone in the relevant department and not at their answering service.....

Unless the last time it was taxed was pre the date SORN was introduced (was it '97?). My car car was last taxed in '86 and DVLA told me "No need to SORN" unless I get it back on the road and take it off again.

Yes thats true enough although you may have to fight to retain your reg number, possibly ????

Ah thanks guys, I think my Minor was last on the road in 1989! I found an MOT fail sheet dated 1989 under the carpets and the mileage was only a few miles less than it is now.
The guy I bought it off said to me "make sure you SORN it" so that was why I tried to.
I also have a 1955 Ford Pop which I've owned since 1985 but has never been on the road. I wondered why DVLA hadnt been in touch about that! Thanks again for your advice, Croft

Hi PSL is that true

? We have all the registration documents and original log book etc? My parents are considering changing the ownership to myself, so if we follow the normal process as if i'd purchased the car that may trigger their system into life any thoughts?

beware that once a vehicle changes hands, the SORN ends, and it must be re-SORN-ed by the new owner. I fell foul of that one!

Some people have had difficulty in retaining their origianl reg number and the club will help out with this if necessary in identifying a vehicle and confirming its identity. The best way forward would be to "buy" the car from your parents and then declare SORN once you are the new owner.

Dean, I would suggest your parents SORN the car first. If DVLA have any queries they can use the documents as supporting evidence of reg number etc. Then when the car is safely SORNed they can transfer it into your name. Remember the name on the V5 does not neccesarily mean the owner anyway, its just the registered keeper.

Went through the process with my parents SORN'ing the old moggy online this morning. We had a message saying a representative may contact the registered keeper or we will hear within 4 weeks with written confirmation. So here's hoping!!!!

Croft... 1986!!! It still has the old tax disc in the windscreen. I will keep everyone informed of the saga if you like.

nope - only if it logbook has not been updated since the early 70's! (Then you need V765 scheme)

Sorn and pre-sorn have nothing to do with keeping the registration mark.

They usually say to give 6 weeks for any doc's to come through before you chase them up.....

Probably blame it on the "credit crunch" they cannot afford the stamp!
